Long-time Fairfield County resident, Barbara Shaffer, passed away Tuesday Oct 23 in her home. She was born Barbara Helfand September 18,1933 in New York City. She attended The High School of Music and Art, Class of '50 and Hunter College, Class of '54. Barbara married Atty. Dick Shaffer on February 5, 1956, and the couple moved to Fairfield County two years later, in 1958. Mrs. Shaffer, also referred to as "Barb," "Mom," "Momma," "Mrs. Shafe," and "Grandma" was known and loved in the Fairfield County Community. She was an encourager, counselor, advisor and, along with her husband, believed the best for people no matter how broken their situations appeared to be. Barbara Shaffer had a gift of faith.
In the late 1970's she worked in the Guidance Counselor's Office in Weston High School. Students remember continually visiting Mrs. Shaffer for words of help and encouragement. Her home was a sanctuary for many who always found a listening ear, understanding and godly advice. No one ever left her home without some gift in their hands. Barbara loved to bless people.
Barbara had an eye for beauty and was an accomplished artist. Some of her paintings appeared in local events; however, she did not choose to focus her time on her art, but instead poured her time and love into people, especially her family. She will be best remembered by her family as a woman who loved God and believed that He is the God of miracles. She always shared amazing anecdotes in books and videos with those around her. She prayed for many friends and family members that can all testify to her great faith in God and in His Word.
Barbara Shaffer leaves behind a great legacy of faith and love and is now together again with her "faith partner," her husband, in God's presence forever. Her family will miss her greatly but are assured that they will see her again in eternity. She leaves behind a son, Bill Shaffer and daughters, Sue Breuner and Sally Anne Weiss and their spouses and six grandchildren. Barbara is also survived by her only sibling, her brother Rick Helfand and his family.
