Barbara Ann (Kovacs) Wallischeck, age 90, of Fairfield, beloved wife of the late Karl H. Wallischeck, passed away peacefully Sunday, February 23, 2025. Born in New York City and raised in Woodlawn, an Irish neighborhood in the Bronx, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Helen (McPartland) Kovacs, and had been a Fairfield resident since 1967. Raised during the late years of the Depression and throughout World War II, Mrs. Wallischeck went on to a distinguished career as an executive secretary. She began at Babcock & Wilcox in New York City and after moving to Fairfield, served as secretary to the President of the University of Bridgeport before retiring as secretary to the Chairman of the Board of the Trans-Lux Corporation. One of the first to live in Woodfield Village in Fairfield, she served for many years on the Landscape Committee. She loved to garden and was an inveterate reader. Barbara was a sailing enthusiast and always loved summer weekends aboard Hanseatic on Long Island Sound and longer trips to Cape Cod, Block Island, and Maine. She and Karl loved art and classical music—she Beethoven and ballet, he opera—and made many trips to Tanglewood and the New York City Ballet and Metropolitan Opera. She and Karl enjoyed their many overseas vacations, including trips to Germany to visit Karl’s family and to Ireland exploring her own maternal roots in County Leitrim. Barbara was a faithful friend and neighbor, and a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who delighted in time spent with her family. She will be deeply missed by her three sons, Karl (daughter-in-law Lucy and beloved grandson Noah) of Lake Tahoe, CA, Eric (son-in-law Sean) of Fairfield, and Rolf (daughter-in-law Maureen and her daughter Stephanie) of Fairfield; a brother, Michael Kovacs (wife Carole) of Hebron, CT, and a sister-in-law, Renate Muller of Hamburg, Germany.
A memorial gathering will be held at the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield, CT on Thursday, March 6th from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12 Noon at Holy Cross Church, 750 Tahmore Drive, Fairfield in Fairfield. Donations in Barbara’s memory may be made to the Fairfield Public Library, 1080 Old Post Road, Fairfield, CT 06824.
