Carol peacefully left our world on Friday, August 05, 2016. Carol was a Fairfield resident for over 45 years. Carol was born and raised in Jersey City, NJ, on January 22, 1943. Daughter of the late Helen A. and Nicodemus Petkus and sister of the late Janet E. Petkus. Carol is survived by her daughter Cassandra of Fairfield, CT., son Christopher (Nel Shelby) of New York City, NY., their children, granddaughter Gracie and grandson Jack, a cousin Ronald Carr (Diane) of Bayonne, NJ., and many numerous loving and caring friends. Carol left a lasting impression on the community and on all who had the privilege of meeting her. A formidable force as an advocate for children and the less fortunate, Carol served as a leader on The Fairfield PTA Council and The Fairfield Board of Education, and as the President of The Connecticut State PTA. Carol also was the Founder and President of The Nutmeg Statewide PTA, whose sole purpose is to provide scholarships to graduating High School Seniors, both typical and special needs students. Carol's skills as a Certified Master Gardener provided her neighbors and friends with beautiful flowers and bountiful herbs and vegetables. The love that Carol showered upon so many and so freely will not be forgotten. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, August 13, 2016 at 11:00 AM meeting DIRECTLY in St. Pius X Church. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Friends may greet the family Friday, August12, 2016 from 4 to 8 PM in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 S Benson Rd., Fairfield.
