Constance A. Benson (Connie), age 86 of Easton, died Sunday September 9, 2018 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Bridgeport. She was the beloved wife of the late Donald T. Benson, a businessman who served in World War II. Connie was born in Wynantskill, NY, raised by her Mother, Marion Foley whose grandparents left Ireland in the early 1800's. After graduating from Troy Catholic High, Connie attended Syracuse University on an academic Scholarship. She graduated with a degree in nursing from Albany Medical College and worked in the field, before retiring to have a family. After marrying Don in 1956, they settled in Ramsey NJ in 1960, living in a neighborhood with many young families. During their 5 years in Ramsey, the family grew to include three children, life was lived to the fullest, and they made many lifelong friends. They moved to Easton in 1965, where she lived for 53 years, enjoying their community, surroundings, and Button Mill Pond. Connie was an avid swimmer and skater and would swim regularly with a group of friends and neighbors known as the "swim club". Constance was a passionate gardener and conservationist. She served many terms as President of the Easton Garden Club and stayed active in that group after stepping down. She won the Conn State Conservation Award. She enjoyed watching and identifying living birds around her property, her favorite of which being bluebirds. She led wildflower rescue efforts and served on the Board of Easton's Senior Park. She traveled extensively with Don in Latin America and Europe. She also took trips with the Garden Club. Maps and crossword puzzles fascinated her, as did biographies and financial investments. She was working crossword puzzles in at the hospital up to the day she passed and stayed involved in her investment club until the end. Survivors include sons, Dana Benson of Los Angeles CA, Val Benson and his wife Inger of Hermosa Beach CA, daughter Paula Evans of Santa Clara CA, and grandchildren Kendall, Riley, Erin, Keagan, and Avery. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, September 14, 2018 at 10:00am at Notre Dame Church, 655 Morehouse Road, Easton. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery 1530 Bronson Rd, Fairfield, CT.
In lieu of flowers we ask that contributions be made in her name to the Easton Garden Club, 85 Burr Street, Easton CT 06612. For information or to offer an online condolence please visit www.SpearMillerFuneralHome.com
