Daniel Tower Jacobsen, age 85 of Saint-Mary's-by-the-sea, beloved husband of Diane Curtis Jacobsen, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 31, 2018. Born in Brookings, SD, the son of the late Daniel Herman
Jacobsen, PhD and Veta Tower Jacobsen, he was a graduate of Knox College in Galesburg, IL. Mr. Jacobsen enrolled in ROTC and upon graduation began his service in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the Army Language School in Monterey, CA. His time served as an Intelligence officer in Kyoto, Japan began his deep love of the Japanese people and culture. Following his military service he graduated from the Thunderbird School of International Management. He began a lengthy career in international banking for Citibank where he traveled the world extensively, retiring as Chief Auditor. He attended
the Advanced Management Program at M.I.T. Daniel was fluent in five languages and loved engaging conversations wherever he worked and traveled. He was an avid reader and enjoyed East Asian Literature, presenting grants to the Westport Library to enrich its collection. He enjoyed music of all kinds, foreign and independent films, spending time with his family, tennis and swimming. While in Manila, he served on the board of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Daniel was a proud member of the Japan Society, and highlights of his last two decades were the annual Old Asia Hands dinners where he was reunited with longtime friends. Survivors in addition to his loving wife Diane include two beloved children, Christopher C. Jacobsen and his wife Leslie of Portland, OR and Susannah A. Jacobsen and Jeffrey Kaufmann of NYC; a cherished grandson, Vaughn Jacobsen; two sisters, Merlyn Farrell of East Dundee, IL and Betty de Vise� of Chicago, IL; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may greet the family Friday, August 10th from 5-8 p.m. at the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield.
