Dr. Vincent Rosivach, a professor at Fairfield University for 53 years, passed away on 13 April 2018. Our father wished to have a meaningful life. He did.
Dad attended Regis High School in New York and received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Fordham University. He has also studied at the University of Louvain (Belgium) and as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Bologna (Italy). In his heart, our father never completely left Europe, taking up residence and doing research and teaching in Montreal.
Dr. Rosivach wrote two books and over one hundred twenty articles and reviews on a wide variety of literary and historical topics within the field of Classics, as well as articles on slavery in colonial Connecticut.
The meaning in his life extended well beyond the academic research he did. Having served in leadership roles in both professional associations and at Fairfield. For his many years of service to his colleagues and the University he was awarded the Fairfield University Faculty Welfare Committee Lifetime Service Award. Many of our conversations with our father over the years focused on his work trying to strengthen the institutional role of the faculty in the University.
Dad's work as teacher was his most enlivening and his impact will be measured in the generations of students he taught. He took great pride in the cheers and applause he received from students at the end of a semester.
Dad was also an active member at the Church of Calvary St. George in Bridgeport, his other home for many years. In addition to being a reader, Dad was very committed to social justice issues and service to those in his community who were less fortunate than he was.
Dad also found meaning in his role as a family man. MaryAnn Rosivach, his sister, Andrew and Rich, his two sons, their wives, Kimya and Amy and his grandchildren, Leonard, Anna and Finneus will miss him very much.
