Edward A. Matto

Edward A. Matto, 97, of Fairfield went home to be with the Lord on October 27, 2023.  He was the beloved husband of the late Joyce Smelter Matto.  Ed was born in Bridgeport to the late Augustus and Marie Matto.

Ed was a proud WWII veteran.  Upon graduation from Bassick High School he enlisted in the Army Aircorps and was stationed in the Pacific arena.  He spent most of his time on the island of Tinian.  Upon his discharge he received an appointment to West Point which he declined.  He was active in the American Legion and VFW Post 9427 where he was the Post Commander in 1998-99.  He had many fond memories of growing up in Black Rock and fishing in Long Island Sound.  He taught for many years at Tomlinson Jr. High and later was a substitute teacher at Christian Heritage School.  He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Fairfield.  He was a true man of faith and could be found every evening reading his Bible.  He is survived by his daughter Janice Lesko, son Mark (Patti) Matto, granddaughter Rebecca (James) Haugh and great-grandsons Ben and Tom Haugh.

Burial with military honors will take place on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at 10:00 AM Oaklawn Cemetery, Fairfield, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church of Fairfield, 65 Church Hill Road, Fairfield.
