Elizabeth M. Brandt

Elizabeth "Betty" M. Brandt, 78, of Fairfield, passed away peacefully in Milford Hospital with family at her side. Elizabeth was born in Bridgeport on June 1, 1945, to the late William and Lillian Morton Brandt.

Known by family and friends as Betty, Betty was a lifelong learner who found joy in sharing the knowledge she gained. Her passion for learning took off after graduating from Bassick High School in 1963, earning the Elmira College Key Award in 1962. Betty graduated from the University of Bridgeport with her Bachelor of Arts in 1968. Her diploma was only one of her many achievements during her education at UB. Betty was recognized as a Dana Scholar, a member of the top ten scholars and initiated into Phi Alpha Theta History society and the Aristeia Honorary Society. In 1972, Betty received her Master of Science from the College of Education at the University of Bridgeport.

Betty continued to live her life in purpose of serving others, becoming a certified Lay Speaker and a certified Competent Toastmaster. Her love for serving others coupled with her knowledge and abilities to advocate for others. Betty became certified in Advocacy from the Advocacy Unlimited Incorporation in 2001, being awarded the Dr. Karen Kangas Award for Excellence in Advocacy. Using her advocacy skills, Betty volunteered as a member of the Bridgeport Bridge House center Medicare Counselor and an advocate for persons with psychiatric disabilities. Betty played an active role in the fight to better the legislation for persons with mental health disabilities, publishing a column in the Hartford Courant pushing for change. In May 2022, Betty was awarded the Golden Knight title from the University of Bridgeport, a moment that will continue to bring her joy as she rests.

She worked as a Medicare Counselor, helping others figure out the Medicare process. She also enjoyed reading and taking art history courses through the adult learner program at local universities. Betty was active member of Fairfield Grace United Church. She loved her church and served on many committees including Staff Parish Relations, the Worship Committee and the Church Council. She also presented sermons on some occasions when the Pastor was away.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother William. She is survived by several cousins.
