F. Stanley Phillips of Southport, CT, passed away Saturday, November 12, 2016 at the age 87. He is survived by his wife, Nancy and his daughter, Linda (Phillips) Magovern. Until recently, Mr. Phillips was an active member of the Southport Congregational Church where he was Chairman of the Board of Deacons, Chairman of the Mission Board, Historian, and on the Search Committee for four ministers over the past 43 years. He was treasurer of the Sasquanaug Association in 1999 and 2000 and actively opposed developments that were not in keeping with traditional values of a small village. He loved the outdoors and assisted in clearing trails and firebreaks within Southport Park. Mr. Phillips was employed by McLean Trucking Company for 13 years in Farmington, CT where the family built their first home, and was a Sunday School teacher for three years at the Farmington Congregational Church. While employed at McLean he originated the containership concept that later became Sealand, Waterman, and S.C. Loveland Barge Lines. His second career was in records management consulting. The family formed Phillips Consulting, Inc. in 1979. Over a period of 20 years the firm served 109 clients within the United States, Paris, Scotland and Yugoslavia. Clients ranged from Aetna to Xerox. While half of the company business focused on New York City and Connecticut clients the other half required family moves to places like Boise, Idaho, Rochester, NY, Holiday, FL and Washington, DC. He was a member of the Association of Records Managers and Administrators-ARMA- and helped form four chapters in CT. For 20 years he conducted seminars for the American Management Association and ARMA throughout the USA. In 1952 Brown University conferred him a Bachelors Degree in Economics; A.B. In 1967 he was awarded a Masters Degree by the University of Hartford, MBA. Stan loved sports especially with his daughter Linda. The family skied together and joined ski clubs all over the country. Linda collected over 60 trophies and won an automobile from Mr. Iacocca. We were the first car in the parking lot at the frigid Olympic Games in Lake Placid. In October 1946 he joined the Army at the age of 17 and served in Alaska for 18 months; skiing in the winter and playing baseball in the summer. Stan sailed is sloop, "Hermes" for 19 years out of Southport Harbor where he logged 525 days of sailing Long Island Sound. Mr. Phillips was a 57 year member of the Masonic Orders including the 32nd Degree from Sphinx Temple in Newington, CT and dual memberships in Frederick-Franklin Lodge #14 in Plainville and Fidelity-St. Johns Lodge # 3 AF & AM in Fairfield. His favorite creed was taken from Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice where his advice to his son was "To thine be true and thou cannot be false to any man." He loved life and lived it fully with his wife Nancy and daughter Linda. A funeral service will be held Saturday, November 19, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in Southport Congregational Church, 524 Pequot Avenue, Southport. Interment will be held Monday, November 21st at 11:00 a.m. in the family plot in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence, RI.
