George C. Cartwright, Jr.

George C. Cartwright, Jr. died Saturday, January 10, 2015. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri on February 22, 1927 and raised in West Hartford, Connecticut. He was educated at the Mount Hermon School, Wm. Hall High School, University of Connecticut, Columbia University and the University of Pittsburgh. He served his country as a Navy Corpsman in World War II and the Korean War. He started his business career as a sales trainee for the Ford Motor Company at a dealership in Meriden, Connecticut. In 1950 he joined the Glens Falls Insurance Company and became a Special Agent, managing the companies affairs in Tennessee and, later, was responsible for the Company's affairs in southwestern Pennsylvania and West Virginia. In 1958 he was recalled to the Home Office to assist in preparation of the company for its first mainframe computer. He later became Vice President and manager of the Commercial Liability Underwriting Department and was also responsible for the company's outgoing reinsurance program. In 1971 he joined General Reinsurance Corporation and Managed the Eastern Department of the Facultative Division. Later he became Executive Vice President and Director of Genamerica Corporation, the management arm for United States affairs of the Generali Group of Trieste and Rome, Italy. In 1977 he joined North American Reinsurance Corporation/Swiss Reinsurance Corporation, where he was Chief Underwriting Officer, Account Executive and became a Senior Vice President. He was instrumental in the founding, organizing and operation of Western Atlantic Reinsurance Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of the parent company where he was Executive Vice President and Director. He retired in 1993 and became a consultant with Towers Perrin Reinsurance Division for a year. He was a Director of the Fortress Insurance Company of Chicago and Connecticut Audubon Society where he was Board Secretary. He was active in The Council of Churches, serving on the YES Committee and St Timothy's Episcopal Church where he worshiped for many years and served as a Vestryman, Warden, and Property Manager. He leaves Nan, his beloved wife of 64 years, a daughter, Eve, and her husband Frederick Church of Chatham, Massachusetts; three sons and their families, David and Ellen of Old Lyme, Connecticut, Andrew and Patricia of Ridgefield, Connecticut, John of Fairfield, Connecticut and eleven grandchildren. His younger sister, Nancy Whittier of Cotuit, Massachusetts, predeceased him in 2013. A memorial service will be held Friday, January 16, 2015 at 11:00 am at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Matthew Calkins, Rector, officiating.
