Jean Carpenter Winton of Fairfield, wife of the late Robert Weber Winton, died Sunday, January 3, 2016 at Bridgeport Hospital. Born in Bridgeport, the daughter of the late Edward Carpenter and Grace Edna Smith, she was a lifelong Fairfield resident. Mrs. Winton graduated from the Unquowa School, the Emma Willard School and Vassar College, class of 1942. Upon graduating from Vassar, she served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. Following the War, Mrs. Winton was employed as a retail buyer for Howland's Department Store in Bridgeport. After meeting and marrying her husband Robert she dedicated her life to raising her family and donating her time to many charitable organizations. She was a long time member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Southport, CT where she served on the Vestry and was a Junior Warden. Mrs. Winton was a lifelong member of the Fairfield Beach Club, a member of the Bridgeport Ladies Charitable Society and Friends of Pediatrics at Bridgeport Hospital. She was also a member of the Junior League of Eastern Fairfield County and a past president. She was an advocate of healthy eating habits and exercise and could often be seen working out at the Fairfield Recreation Center. Mrs. Winton was a consummate hostess who loved entertaining for family and friends. Survivors include two children, Lisa Winton Callahan and her husband Don of Fairfield and David Carpenter Winton and his wife Elaine Hannah Winton of Novato, CA; four grandsons: Daniel H. (D)Callahan, Jr., Charles W. Callahan and his wife Kate, Peter D. Callahan and Edward C. (Teddy) Callahan, and two step grandsons, Ben and Adam Rosenbaum. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, Southport. Interment will be private.
