John F. ( Jack) Tommins, of Fairfield, CT and formerly of Rockville Centre, NY, passed away on March 10, 2015. He was the loving husband of Carolyn Keating Tommins, his wife of 61 years and the son of the late Arthur and Marie Quinlan Tommins. He was born on April 21, 1925 and was just weeks away from his 90th birthday. Mr. Tommins had a distinguished banking career on Long Island. He retired in 1991 as Senior Vice President with First National Bank of Long Island and spent most of his career at Franklin National Bank, and its successor, European- American Bank as Senior Vice President, with responsibilities over auto and marine dealer financing and consumer lending divisions. Known as Jack, he began his career with the Commercial Credit Corporation in 1947 and he served in professional leadership positions as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Long Island Better Business Bureau, Chairman of the Long Island Installment Credit Committee of the Long Island Bankers Association and committees of the New York State Bankers Association. He was a long-time member of the Sun & Surf Beach Club in Atlantic Beach and served on the Board of Governors. Mr. Tommins was a World War II veteran. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy following graduation from South Side High School in 1943. While in the Navy, he was selected for the V-12 Officer Training program at Colgate University and the NROTC Program at Dartmouth College. He graduated from Colgate University in 1947, where he was a letterman in both baseball and basketball and Jack was also a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He earned an advanced degree at the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University. In addition to his wife Carolyn, he is survived by his 4 children, sons John F. Tommins Jr. (Carmel), of Thornton, Colorado, James A. ( Trish), William R. (Paula) and daughter, Carolyn Tommins Whalen ( Bill) , all of Fairfield and formerly Rockville Centre, NY; 11 grandchildren, Erin, Marie, Rose, Catherine, James, Patrick, Michael, Madeleine, Mia, William and Thomas; 4 great- grandchildren, and his sister, MaryJane Cramer of Littleton, Colorado, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Catherine McCahill. Arrangements are being made by the Spear- Miller Funeral Home in Fairfield, CT. Family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 17 from 4:00- 8:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial is Wednesday, March 18 at Our Lady of Assumption at 10:00 am.
