Joseph R. Konkol, age 86, of Fairfield, beloved husband of nearly 57 years of Viola (Francisco) Konkol, passed away Thursday, August 3, 2017 at Bridgeport Hospital. Born in Dickson City, PA the son of the late Joseph and Josephine Konkol, he had been a Fairfield resident since 1965. Mr. Konkol proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War where he received a Bronze Star for Valor. He retired from Handy & Harman in 1993 where he worked as a melt make-up man. Joseph also worked part-time for many years as a custodian at the Fairfield Town Hall. He was an active member of the Raymond J. Bower Post 1466 Catholic War Veterans. He was a fan of all New England sports, but a life long fan of the Boston Red Sox. He enjoyed gardening, ball games, puzzles, polka music and an occasional trip to the casino. An outgoing, gregarious and friendly man, Joseph loved spending time with his family and his wide circle of friends. In addition to his loving wife Viola, he will be sadly missed by his three beloved children, Joseph R. Konkol, III and his wife Donna of Monroe, Lori A. Kratzer and her husband Richard of Milford and David A. Konkol and his wife Terri of Naugatuck; six cherished grandchildren, Jessica, Colleen and Kyle Konkol and Marla, Julia and Ricky Kratzer; a sister, Sally Stachacz and her husband Walter of Black Rock, his very special niece, Gail Janes and her husband Fred of Black Rock. He was predeceased by a brother, Stanley and two sisters, Eleanor and Lilly. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Ann's Church, 481 Brewster Street, Bridgeport. Interment with military honors will follow in Mountain Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport. Friends may call Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield.
