Margaret A. (Armstrong) Axline

Margaret (Pegge) Armstrong Axline, age 93 of Fairfield, beloved wife of 70 years to J. Warren Axline, M.D., passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loved ones Tuesday, February 14, 2023. Born September 23, 1929 in Columbus, OH, the daughter of the late Francis Charles Armstrong, a World War I pilot, and Tacy Simms Armstrong. She had been a Fairfield, CT resident since 1977.

The loving wife of a career Air Force Physician, Mrs. Axline lived in many locations where Dr. Axline was stationed. She attended Ohio State University and graduated from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, TX where Warren was stationed at the time. While stationed at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, England, Pegge took a lead role in the community outreach program and was a member of the English Speaking Union and was recognized for her accomplishments at a Presentation to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in 1974.

Prior to health concerns and Covid-19, Pegge had been an active member of Greenfield Hill Congregational Church. She was the first female chair of the Board of Trustees and was very instrumental in the renovations of the sanctuary and parlor as well as the Scout Barn and the Gunnery. She volunteered during and after the establishment of the Parish Court senior housing in Fairfield, and was the lead editor and contributor of the church cook book.

Pegge was an exceptional cook, loved to garden, sew, and read. Her daily mantra was to learn something new which she proudly accomplished to the day she passed. She was a volunteer at the Fairfield Women’s Exchange and the Near & Far Aid Association.
In addition to her loving husband, she will be dearly missed by three beloved daughters, Kristen Axline of Reno, NV, Susan Axline of Gales Ferry, CT, and Anne Axline of Fairfield, CT; three adoring grandchildren, Elizabeth Vera of Tallahassee, FL, Suzannah Freedman of San Francisco, CA, and John Howe of Alexandria, VA; a cherished great-grandson, William Vera, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Robert C. Armstrong Sr., CDR, US Navy (Ret.) and two sisters, Patricia White and Barbara Ann Mertz.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at 11:30 a.m. in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield with the Rev. Dr. David Rowe officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Fairfield.
