Maudie Turner Altieri

Maudie Turner Altieri died surrounded by her family on Sunday evening, January 22, 2017, at Bridgeport Hospital. Maudie was born February 14, 1947, in Springfield, Ohio, the beloved daughter of Robert and Martha Turner. She grew up with her three sisters, Diane, Sheila, and Martha, whom she loved and who loved her dearly. She attended Springfield Catholic Central High School and Immaculata College in Washington, DC, before moving to New York City where she worked in the information department of Memorial Sloane Kettering and met her husband, John. They were married on January 24, 1976. Maudie welcomed with gusto her vocation as a full time Mom. With John, she raised six children in the Shippan neighborhood of Stamford where they were parishioners at Our Lady Star of the Sea. Maudie was an active participant in the Star of the Sea, Stamford Yacht Club, Federal Little League, Stamford Youth Hockey, and Meredith NH Passage Condo communities, among others, as well as many other of her kids' school communities. During one year, she was the principal chauffer for eleven of the six kids' contemporaneously active sports teams. Many of the other Shippan neighborhood kids called her "Mom," and many more ate at her table. A few were known to regularly "go shopping" in Maudie's refrigerator. They were occasionally kicked out but always let back in.

Maudie and John moved to Fairfield in 2006 and joined St. Pius X parish, where Maudie taught religious education and was an active participant in the life of the parish for several years.
Maudie was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She was generous and hospitable to all she encountered. She was also characteristically irreverent - leaving no doubt that she meant what she said. Maudie Altieri always saw the good in people. She met life's joys, challenges and sorrows head on to the best of her ability, and kept a sense of humor throughout her life. She loved her Lord Jesus, her family and her friends with all of her heart. Maudie delighted in reading to kids. She could recite hundreds of children's poems, stories and songs from memory, and could transport her audience - young and old alike - into worlds of words filled with magic and wonder. When her own children were grown, Maudie volunteered at Malta House in Norwalk, a home for homeless, pregnant and parenting mothers. Her favorite roles there were reading to the children and helping young mothers learn the art of parenting. Maudie was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Martha Turner. She is survived by her sisters, Diane, Sheila and Martha, and their husbands Dick and Gale, Maudie's husband, John, and their six children, Christopher, Sheila, Kieran, Kevin, Matthew and Anne, daughters in law Ester, Sara, Tracey and Alice, grandchildren Mikaylah, Calyb, Joseph, Rachel, Peter, Eleanora, Eva, Jack and Mabel, and many beloved nieces and nephews. She took great delight in her children and grandchildren until the very last day. A wake will be held at Spear Miller funeral home in Fairfield on Thursday, January 26 from 4 to 8 o'clock, and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Pius X parish in Fairfield on Friday the 27th at 10 A.M.
