Nicholas Peter Skalkos, Jr.

Nicholas Peter Skalkos Jr., Air Force Veteran, Master Welder, Husband, Father, Brother and Papa left us on February 8th, 2025 at the age of 94.

Nick was born in Bridgeport CT to Nicholas Peter Skalkos and Elsie Lee Tooker. He lived in Bridgeport and then moved to Fairfield when he was young. Nick met Sylvia Strigh at Roger Ludlow High School where they both found true love. They have been an inseparable pair since, married in 1958 for almost 67 years and raised three children, Nicholas III, Chris, and Leann and lived in Easton for 50 years. Dad retired to DownEast Maine by the ocean and called Maine home just as much as CT.

Nick has been a master welder his entire life, starting at Sikorsky Aircraft, and then moving on to Thommon Welding and Peerless Nuclear. In 1984 he decided to open his own family welding business; Skalkos Welding Co in Fairfield with his three children working next to him. He welded as recently as six months ago. Nick had boundless energy and worked extremely hard his entire life to provide the best life for his family which was his top priority always. He was the sweetest, most loving, patient, kind, affectionate and most giving father they could have asked for. He was incredibly smart, able to fix anything and enjoyed working on his garden, machinery, and any project which needed repair. Nick took pride in teaching the fine art of welding and brazing to his three children as well as other countless men throughout his career. His weldments were considered works of art with many tool & die repair work shipped to him from around the country to weld as no one else could. Nick loved his wife and children to no end, completely and unconditionally and they always took priority over everything. He was extremely excited for his first great grandchild to be born in March which would carry his mother’s name sake. His mother Elsie Lee was a great influence on his life and he missed her dearly. His father Nicholas Peter Skalkos, Mother Elsie Lee Tooker Skalkos, and siblings Peter Nicholas Skalkos, Ann Coates and Olga Tomaszewski all went to heaven before him.

Nick leaves his devoted wife of 66 years, Sylvia Skalkos, his sister, Sandra Will, his loving children, Nicholas Skalkos and Shelby, Chris Skalkos and his wife Tina, Leann Skalkos and Rod Quinn, and his grandchildren, Jane and her husband Logan, Annie and her fiance Josh, Raymond, Katie and Lindsay as well as many nieces and nephews.

Nick would appreciated donations being sent to Southwest Harbor Ambulance P.O. Box 437, Southwest Harbor, ME 04679 as they were so wonderful to him during his time in need.
