Nicholas Upton of Redding, aged 19, was killed in a swimming accident off South Africa's Wild Coast on Sunday, August 30th. After an extensive search, his body was recovered on Friday, September 4th. Nicholas was attending the University of Cape Town through a study abroad program at George Washington University. Majoring in International Studies with a concentration in Africa, Nicholas' goal was to be an intelligence analyst. Nicholas was a member of both the crew team at George Washington University as well as the Kappa Alpha fraternity. Nicholas graduated from Joel Barlow High School in 2012 and rowed at the Saugatuck Rowing Club in Westport, CT. Nicholas leaves behind a father, Jim Upton, mother, Margaret Mirowski, brother, Zachary Upton, stepsisters, Victoria and Alexandra Mirowski, stepmother, Jennifer Upton, stepfather, Mark Mirowski and grandfather, John Nipar, all of Redding as well as a grandmother, Gladys Upton of Fulton, Maryland. Nicholas also leaves behind 16 cousins. A wake will be held for Nicholas Upton at Spear Miller Funeral Home in Fairfield on Friday, September 18th from 3:00-8:00PM. His funeral will be held at St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church in Fairfield on Saturday, September 19th at 1:00 PM. Given Nicholas' penchant for Hawaiian shirts and bow ties, either are considered appropriate attire for these events.
