Otilio Poubel Filho

Otilio Poubel Filho was born in Minas Gerais, Brazil on June 3, 1957. He grew up on his family farm surrounded by rolling hills, green mountains (as far as the eye could see), pastures filled with livestock, and the fresh-crisp-air that made up the Minas countryside. He had a beautiful childhood where he was given the freedom to explore nature, learning the ins and outs of attending the farm. By the time he was twelve years old, Otilio was working full-time with his family, keeping the animals, maintaining the crops and working the local farmers market. Those early years taught him the value of hard-work, dedication and commitment that later would serve him immensely in America. During his years in Minas, he developed a lifetime love for animals, gardening, and fishing, and could often be found during his off time tending to his expansive home garden, where among other things he grew exotic Brazilian fruits and vegetables, or by the bay fishing into the wee morning hours.

After arriving in the United States in 1990 he worked for over a decade at Knickerbockers, followed by Outback and Archie Moore's. He loved and cherished his work family. Otilio was known for his incredible work ethic, often doing back to back shifts quickly obtaining respect and recognition for his unwavering dedication.

Known for his generosity, Otilio and his wife Jandira opened their home to many people who needed help. Whether it was a place to stay or a hot plate of food, Otilio always showed great compassion. He lived selflessly amongst his friends and family and was always the first to lend a helping hand. For this he was deeply loved by all who knew him.

He loved to greet people in his own unique way, and he often played practical jokes on unsuspecting friends, showcasing his wicked sense of humor. Loving to laugh, he wanted those around him laughing too, demonstrating that he did not take himself too seriously and was just an ordinary guy with extraordinary attributes.

Otilio was killed by a drunk driver on October 13, 2021 as he drove home from work. He is survived by his wife, Jandira; his son Roberto, his step children Michael and Rafaella, his sisters in Brazil, grandchildren Dillon, Deven, Michael, Melanie, Melissa, Jennifer, Gustavo and Emily. His beloved daughter Tiffany died on July 29, 2021 and greeted her father upon his entrance to heaven.

What a legacy, what a life, we invite each of you to keep Otilio alive in your hearts. Let his memory bring a smile to your face and laughter for your soul! We move forward with thanksgiving for the time we had with him and look ahead in anticipation for the day we meet again!

A service celebrating Otilio’s life will be held Thursday, November 4, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. at the Stepney Baptist Church, 423 Main Street, Monroe.
