Phyllis Thompson Wing, 98, of Trumbull, passed away Tuesday March 7, 2023 at home.
Phyllis was born in Toledo, Ohio, to Charles and Margaret Thompson, the fifth of six children. She studied piano for nine years, and was active in Girl Scouts and church choir. As a teen, she worked at the soda fountain in her brother in law’s store, and ran the trading post at Girl Scout summer camp.
Phyllis won a full tuition scholarship to Miami University where she majored in Spanish, graduated magna cum laude, and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. Using money she earned as business manager of the yearbook, she spent a summer in Mexico, living with a family. She worked in the export department of the Toledo Scale company, putting her Spanish to work. She married Kennard Loren Wing in 1949 in Toledo. Moved by his employer, they lived in Columbus Ohio, Niagara Falls New York, Glen Burnie Maryland, Lake Charles Louisiana, McIntosh Alabama, Towson Maryland, and Scotch Plains New Jersey, before settling in Trumbull.
Phyllis was an active member of Great Decisions, book, and Bible study groups, as well as the American Association of University Women. She played the piano and loved to play bridge. She enjoyed watching the New York Giants, New York Jets, and the Ohio State University football games. She maintained extensive family genealogical records.
As part of her membership in a community group called Fun With Foods, Phyllis laid out and typeset the cookbook the group created using only her home typewriter. She taught Sunday School at the Congregational Church of Easton, was a Cub Scout den mother, organized a student-exchange program, ran several Girl Scout events, volunteered in multiple school libraries, and volunteered to plan meals and order food for the local school in rural Alabama.
Phyllis was an avid reader and enjoyed jigsaw and crossword puzzles. With her family, she traveled extensively throughout the US and Canada, while vacationing at Lake of the Woods, Ontario, 40 years.
In all of her achievements, activities, and community involvements, Phyllis put her husband and children first.
Phyllis is survived by her daughter Linda, (Paul Blake), son Ken (Cara McMenamin), and daughter Connie, and by grandchildren Phillip (Casey), Tom (Sandi), Jonathan, Sara (Zach), James (Janine), and Rebecca, and by great-grandson Colin. Her husband Kennard passed in 2008.
She was interred at Whiteford Union Cemetery in Lambertville, Michigan, on March 21, 2023, which would have been her 99th birthday. A memorial service will be held April 22, 2023 at the Congregational Church of Easton. Luncheon will follow in the Church Hall.
Those wishing to make a memorial charitable contribution are asked to consider the Congregational Church of Easton.
