Richard W. Mentes, Sr., age 85, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 22. He was longtime resident of Fairfield.
Richard was born in Bridgeport on July 7, 1932. He was the son of Joseph and Viola Mentes also of Bridgeport. He is survived by his wife Marie. He leaves behind his four children, son Richard Jr. and his partner Lucy, daughter Tina and husband Jay and their children Aaron and Stephen, daughter Dawn and daughter Elaine and husband Bruce and sister-in-law Barbara Mitchell.
After graduating from Bullard Havens Technical School, Richard served on the U.S.S. Charles S. Sperry and U.S.S Cascade as a metal smith(ME2) during the Korean War. After serving his country Richard worked for the Bullard Company and Bullard Castings for 36 years as a machinist and then Safety Director. After the Bullard Company moved to another state Richard was employed at BJ's Wholesale Club as a Supervisor Loss Prevention and Maintenance for 12 years. In addition to his regular jobs he also served as a Special police officer for the Town of Fairfield for 25 years. He was also a lifetime member of the U.S. Navy league and member of Port 5 Navy Veterans as well as a lifetime member of the Fayerweather Yacht Club and American Legion Post 74.
A graveside service will be held Friday May 25th at Noon, at Lawncroft Cooperative Cemetery, 1740 Black Rock Turnpike, Fairfield.
