Robert Paul May, 77, of Southport, Connecticut died peacefully and surrounded by family at his home on Saturday, December 21.
Bob was born on February 28,1947 in Bellport, NY to Werner and Helen May. A career special educator for 35 years in the Westport Public Schools, Bob was a beloved teacher to countless students and a respected peer among his colleagues. Following retirement, Bob channeled his observant nature toward time gardening and walking outdoors. He was known for his long daily walks along the beaches of Southport and Westport, during which he would collect a range of found treasures. From driftwood to discarded sand toys, Bob could turn what most others would overlook into intricate, whimsical, and beautiful pieces of art. Bob was also an avid photographer, capturing elements of the natural world with a keen eye for color and contrast. He shared his pieces and photographs widely with friends and family, who will always remember Bob’s humble and unique creativity as an artist.
Bob spent many years giving of his time to the Operation Hope Food Pantry, building friendships and providing support and laughter to the community that he loved. His gentle spirit and presence meant Bob was also a chosen favorite of many dogs over the course of his life, as though they could sense that they had found a kindred spirit. Bob delighted in simple pleasures: hot and (very) sweet coffee, a well-crafted wooden slotted spoon, the skittering of shorebirds along the beach, a long and meandering conversation with a loved one, and an ice-cold vodka martini, extra dry.
Bob was extraordinarily generous with his patience, good humor, and presence. He will be remembered with laughter and love by all who knew him. Bob is predeceased by his parents and his younger brothers Bruce, Werner, and Daniel May. He is survived by his elder brother, Richard May; his children, Morgan May and Whitney Buckley, and their spouses; his four cherished grandchildren; his ex-wife and dear friend Kaye May; and a wide circle of family and friends.
The family will offer visitation on January 11 from 10 am-12 pm, followed by a service to celebrate Bob’s life at 12 pm at Spear Miller Funeral Home in Fairfield, Connecticut. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Operation Hope in Bob’s honor.
