Robert (Bob) C. Wittekind, age 91, of Fairfield, CT, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Monday, March 31, 2025, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Bridgeport, CT. Born in New York City, he was the son of the late Carl Wittekind and the late Marie McAllister Wittekind. His childhood years were spent in Pelham, NY, and, after living in New York City, Chicago and Ann Arbor, Michigan, he made his home in Fairfield, CT, from 1980 on.
Bob attended Fordham University, where he participated in ROTC. Following graduation, he served in the US Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in Korea after the Korean Conflict. Later, he received an MBA from the University of Chicago.
Bob began his career in sales and marketing with Johnson & Johnson, and he later became a marketing executive in the chemical industry, most notably with Stauffer Chemical. Upon his retirement, he volunteered with the Service Corps of Retired Executives for almost 20 years.
More than anything, Bob appreciated his relatives and home, delighting in family gatherings. He loved tending to his yard and lawn while enjoying the birds and nature he encountered. Travel was a constant during his life, and he visited countries throughout the world. After retiring, he returned to his Pre-1945 World Stamp Collection that he started as a young boy. Reading The New York Times and historical literature were an important part of each day. He treasured summer gatherings with friends at Fairfield Beach Club.
Surviving are Bob’s loving wife of 51 years, Sue Carroll Wittekind, and their daughters, Jennifer Garran (Peter) of Boston, MA, and Heather Mahland (Erik) of New York City, along with his grandchildren, Peter and Gloria Garran and Grace and Margaux Mahland. He was preceded in death by his brother, Eugene Wittekind, and his sister, Gloria Suk. Many beloved nieces and nephews also survive him.
A memorial service will be held at Greenfield Hill Congregational Church on May 19, 2025, at 11:00 AM, with a private burial to take place in the Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, donations to the GHCC Mission Fund are requested. The address is 1045 Old Academy Road, Fairfield, CT 06824.
