Ruth Lang Powell

Ruth Lang Powell passed away at the age of 93 on July 12, 2024 at Sunrise of Fairfield, Connecticut.  She grew up in Fairfield and eventually moved to Easton, Connecticut for 50 years after marrying Orville “Pete” Powell, who predeceased her in 1998.  Ruth’s parents were John and Esther Lang.  As an only child, she had a large extended Swedish family since her mother had eight brothers and sisters who emigrated from Sweden.  Christmas Eve was always the primary gathering of the year for a Swedish smorgasbord party where Korv and Kram were the highlights!  Ruth was a graduate of Goucher College in Maryland, and continued her interest in education by teaching at Unquowa School in Fairfield, serving on the Easton Board of Education, as well as participating in AAUW and PEO.  Ruth and Pete were committed members of the Covenant Church of Easton, helping to move the church from its original location in Bridgeport to Easton.  They were members of the Patterson Club, and enjoyed spending their summers on the shores of Lake Winnipesauke in New Hampshire.  Ruth’s interests included playing bridge, watching Jeopardy, reading many kinds of books and People Magazine, and sending & receiving letters and cards.  Ruth leaves her three children, John Preston Powell, David Jeffrey Powell, Elizabeth Lang Dolfi, and seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, all of whom she adored.  In her later years, she also had great friends in Kurt Schneider of Trumbull and his daughters.  The family are thankful for the kind nursing care Ruth received at Sunrise of Fairfield, and all of her friends and relatives who visited her over the years.  Gifts of remembrance may be given to the  Covenant Church of Easton  ,  Unquowa School of Fairfield  , or  Goucher College of Maryland  in her name.  A Memorial Service to celebrate Ruth Powell’s life will be held on Saturday, September 28th at 10:30am. It will be held at the Covenant Church of Easton (1 Sport Hill Rd, Easton, CT).
