Wayne Gunnar Lindquist, native of Black Rock, passed away peacefully at home on May 6 at the age of 74 following a nine month battle with brain cancer.
Wayne was a fourth generation Black Rocker. He graduated from Black Rock School, Bassick High School, and Gettysburg College. While at Gettysburg he met his future wife, Joan Finkenstadt. This July will be their 50th wedding anniversary.
In 1967 and 1968 Wayne served honorably in the U.S. Navy. For most of his married life Wayne lived on Long Island but in 2009 returned to Black Rock, purchasing the house in which he had grown up. He loved Ash Creek and St. Mary's. He was an avid gardener of rare talent. He spent endless hours beautifying his yard, his community, and the world. His plantings ensure that he will always be with us.
Wayne was predeceased by his parents Gunnar and Greta Hultgren Lindquist. He is survived by his wife Joan, his daughter Marnia Lindquist, her sons Liam and Erik, his daughter Gretchen Pope, her sons James, Aidan, and William, and his brother Brian.
He will be sorely missed by his family and his community.
Wayne's family will hold a celebration of his life on Saturday, May 19 at Port 5 Naval Veterans Club in the Black Rock section of Bridgeport (69 Brewster Street).
Calling hours 2:00-4:00. Memorial Service 4:00 PM. Reception to follow.
