Born in Bridgeport, the son of the late Andrew and Margaret Wargo, he had been a Fairfield resident for most of his life. Bill graduated from Nathan Hale School and served in the U.S. Merchant Marines during World War II and the U.S. Army Medical Corps during the Korean War. He retired in 1997 as the Head Custodian for the Fairfield Public School System. Following his retirement he worked as a parking lot security guard at the CVS on Black Rock Turnpike where he enjoyed chatting with the many patrons he assisted. Bill was a member of the Southport Volunteer Fire Department. He loved watching hockey and was a life member of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Booster Club. He was active in scouting during his son's scouting days with Troop 82 in Fairfield. Bill loved Halloween, and was famous in his South Benson Road neighborhood for his extensive decorations. He loved animals of all kinds and was always willing to take strays under his wing and care for them. Bill loved yard work and always was working on a variety of projects. Above all else, he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Survivors include his beloved son, William Emerick Wargo, Jr. and his wife Jennifer of North Haven; five cherished granddaughters who he loved very much, Linda, Brenda, Jenna, Alexa and Victoria; a loving great-grandson, Liam; his devoted in-laws, Henry and Sharon Rafa of Virginia and Diane Allen of Vermont and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Andrew Wargo. Friends may greet the family Wednesday, September 13, 2017 from 4-8 p.m. in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield. A private graveside service with military honors will be held in Oak Lawn Cemetery. The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to the caring and devoted staff of Vitas Hospice of Middlebury for the wonderful and compassionate care provided to Bill during his illness. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Vitas Innovative Hospice, 199 Park Road Extension #102, Middlebury, CT 06766 or to the Southport Volunteer Fire Department, 69 Main Street, Southport, CT 06890.
